Pembina, a Canadian Energy corporation, wants to build a Natural Gas connector pipeline spanning 234 miles from Malin to Coos Bay, Oregon. The move would be Oregon’s largest investment in greenhouse gas infrastructure in the state. Having been twice denied by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) for failing to provide evidence for public benefit, the pipeline is now under the consideration of the Department of State Lands for the third time. Pembina claims the pipeline would bring jobs to struggling communities in Southern Oregon, and generate billions of dollars in tax revenue for the state. However, many activists and private citizens are against the large scale investment in greenhouse gas, citing environmental concerns and property rights issues. This issue, which will determine Oregon’s energy future and its place in the modern economy, has locals across the state divided.
